The five D's of dodgeball: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge!”

To borrow some famous quotes from Patches O’Houlihan, the legendary dodgeball player:

“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!”

“If you can dodge traffic, you can dodge a ball!”

“Take care of your balls and they'll take care of you. “

“Remember, dodgeball is a sport of violence, exclusion and degradation. So, when you're picking players in gym class, remember to pick the bigger, stronger players for your team. That way you can gang up on the weaker ones, like Winston here.”

Dodgeball, a game recognized under the ADAA, The American Dodgeball Association Of America, became very popular after the production of the film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story in 2004 by 20th Century Fox, written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and starring Vince Vaughn, Christine Taylor, Ben Stiller, and Rip Torn. The film focuses on a rivalry between the owners of Average Joe's, a small gym, and Globo-Gym, a competing big-budget gym located across the street. Peter LaFleur (Vaughn), the owner of the smaller gym, has defaulted on his mortgage and enters a dodgeball tournament in an attempt to earn the money necessary to prevent his gym from being purchased by Globo-Gym. Globo-Gym enters a team in the tournament in an effort to ensure that Average Joe's gym fails.

SNP Fair Dinkum Dodgers
Fair Dinkum formed their inaugural dodgeball team, known as the SNP Fair Dinkum Dodgers, participated for the first time in the Hong Kong Dodgeball League in 2008. Although initially this was for a bit of fun and laugh, being Fair Dinkum, the team still took the season seriously. However since most, if not all, of the team members previous experience of dodgeball was watching the Dodgeball movie on a Sunday afternoon, we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into.
Although the team performed admirably, we officially got the “Wooden Spoon” award in the regular season among 8 teams in the league. We are now in the Play-offs but with 7 games of experience behind us, we are ready to take them on!!
Stay tuned for our official results!

What is Dodgeball?
Background
Dodgeball is a traditional game taught in physical education classes in the U.S. and Canada. It is usually played in elementary school, but it is played in middle school, high school, and college and as a professional sport as well. It is also popular in informal settings and is often played by schoolchildren on a playground or in a gym. There are many variations of the game, but each involves players trying to avoid being hit by a ball that players on the other team are throwing at them. A children's game called "dodge ball" has been noted as early as 1892.

Players
There are usually seven to ten that compete per team at a time. The minimum number of players to start a match is four players.
A player that has been eliminated may enter the match at any time of each game to replace an injured player, or if a teammate catches an opponent's “live” ball.

The Playing Field
The playing field is a rectangular shape of at least 48 feet in length, and at least 30 feet in width. The field is divided in half by a center line and “attack lines” 10 feet from, and parallel to the center line. Also, “warning lines” are drawn one foot from the end line. It is rectangle.

During play, all players must remain “in bounds” with the sole exception of being the end line. Failure to comply would eliminate the player from the game.

Equipment
The Balls are usually the size of a volley ball and are made of hard, light rubber or leather.

The Game
The object of the game is to eliminate all of the opposition by any of the following methods:

  • Hitting an opponent with thrown balls.
  • Catching an opponent's thrown balls in the air prior to its hitting the ground. Also, at that point the defending team gets a player back if any have been eliminated.

The game begins by placing the 6 game balls on the center line, three on each side of the center hash mark. Players must place at least one foot on the end line. On the opening whistle, players may rush to the center line to retrieve the balls. Each team may only retrieve the balls on the right hand side of the hash mark. Players may only begin to throw at the opponents once the ball has been brought back over the “attack lines” closest to their own end line. At no point can any player cross over to the opposite side of the center line to the opponent's side.
